Just looking at the cover of this book, you'd think that it was yet another book listing bike rides in a region. Well, that's true, and that's why I picked it up originally. But then I picked a route that looked interesting, and found a treasure trove of very well-written and interesting local history. After that first ride, I found myself sitting down and reading through the descriptions of all the rides just because of how fascinating they were. The histories he presents give a general view of the region, and then point you to lots of little interesting tidbits about everything in the area - whether it be to tell you why that particular fire tower still exists or to quip about an old Supreme Court case over ownership of the Connecticut River ('What New Hampshire actually gained from the victory other than the right to pay for the bridges is unknown.').Of course, if you're a fellow cyclist, MacKay does also provide a great listing of bike rides in the area, including all the information you need about how hard the ride is, where the difficult spots are, what kind of bike you need (i.e. the quality of any dirt roads), and interesting spots to look out for or stop at along the way.This short book is aimed at bicyclists who want to explore the Upper Valley, but should not be missed even by those who want drive or walk around the region, or for bicyclists who just want to find some training routes.
