Hunter is a professor of art and archaeology at Princeton and the curator of Modern Art at the university museum. As such, he is eminently qualified to undertake this beautifully produced examination of the life and works of Gaston Lachaise (1882-1935). He discusses Lachaise's works, which are rightly described as still controversial. Lachaise's massive female nudes, female fertility figures, and works of "disturbing eroticis" are examined in the context of the artist's life and the age in which he worked. The quality of reproduction is excellent, and many sculptures are photographed from different angles. These challenging works are especially overwhelming when seen together. Great book for a great price. 9 1/2" x 12", 243 pages. This book offers wonderful photographs of Lachaise's work by the photographer David Finn who photogaphed the massive book on Canova which is a treasure in my collection. This book also offers a brief history of the artist. I purchased Gaston Lachaise "The Man and His Work" along with this book so I could have a more indepth history of the artist. Some books going for 60.00 may have great images as well but one can't beat the quality of this book for the price, as a starving artist one can't always afford the big coffee table books. This book does not show all of the artist's work but what is documented is well represented by the artistic photographs.
