About the Author
Robert S. Jordan has doctorates from both Princeton and Oxford Universities, where he was a member of St. Antony's College. He served as Director of Research for the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. He was Distinguished Professor and Fleet Professor for the U.S. Naval War College and lectured at the Army and Air War Colleges, along with the former British Imperial Defence College. He has published widely on Cold War alliance policy, coalition maritime affairs, international administration and military biography and lives in Woodbridge, VA.

Many citizens of our nation do not realize that we always have outstanding generals on duty leading our military forces generation after generation, in times of peace and in times of war. An outstanding example is General Andrew Jackson Goodpaster. He fought and was injured in World War II then went on to Princeton to obtain a PhD in International Affairs. During the Eisenhower administration he was the White House military adviser to the president. Imagine that, military adviser to a five star general! Later he commanded a division, served as Chief of Staff to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, took over as second in command in Vietnam when General Abrams was moved up to Vietnam Commander. He ended his career as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, the commander of all NATO forces. Following his retirement he was called back into service to serve as West Point Commandant following a cheating scandal. After his final retirement he served as Chairman of the Atlantic Council and was heavily engaged in nuclear disarmament issues. Professor Jordan has written a fine biography of a great American
It is a great story about an awesome man and military officer. This book should inspire more officers to achieve their best.
I knew the name on General Goodpaster when I was in Vietnam. This book filled out the rest of his story.
Knew little about the General before reading this book. I found that it didn't have much to say about the General as a leader of men in the field which left me thinking that he was more of a bookworm General than an actual warrior.
