5.0 out of 5.0 Stars An Excellent Introduction!, June 4, 2007 This book is very easy to read without being shallow and gentle without compromising the truth. What a shame that modern preachers are so affraid of offending men that it is possible to attend church for years without ever hearing the first principle of the gospel, the sovereignty of God. I enjoy James White's more scholarly books also, but this easy to read format is a necessary introduction for a generation who has grown up on Veggie Tales. There are a few books I have always liked to keep extra copies of, but none as urgent and helpful as this one. --A. Customer, Seattle, WA USA

I personally follow Dr. White on twitter as well as his live podcast on his website. I can tell you that the words in this book are taught in the same fashion when he is live. Beacause of that, I know that he really loves the Lord and wants his fellow believers to have the same knowledge of God that he does. Dr. White is a very genuine man, and he refuses to stray from truth. All of his works area friendly to us included in the "non-scholar" group, and are very easy to follow. This book is a short introduction to the doctrine of God's Sovereignty, and will give you a great start to delving deeper into the subject, please buy this book as well as other books Dr. White his written.
White offers a very good, concise case for the merits of Calvinism. He presents a six-petaled tulip rather than five petals, beginning with the sovereignty of God rather than the total depravity of man. There are three especially good things about this title. First, he weaves Scripture throughout each of the six points he develops. Rather than just relying on philosophical or rational arguments, he continues to go back to the Bible. Second, his language is very down-to-earth and non-technical. While this author's intellect would enable him to pen a lofty presentation, he instead communicates in simple yet profound terms. Third, he gives a very brief overview of the history of the Reformation and marks the place of the doctrines of grace within the thought of Luther, Calvin, and other leading figures of the Sola Scriptura movement. Though I don't consider myself a Calvinist, this book is very well-written. I recommend it as a good primer for anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of the doctrines of grace that many believers today embrace.
I got this book for my mother, Evalena Hoover, the following is her review:This book is written so that the complete newcomer to Christianity can understand yet a long term studier can also glean new information at the same time. Writing for two audiences at the same time is an art and a blessing which this author, James White, possesses.Prior to reading this book I had never heard the term predestination. I was completely confused when my pastor said "if you want to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior" or "accept Jesus into your heart" and yet as I read the Bible I would come across passages that spoke if Jesus' complete work on the cross. I wondered: How can it be complete if we must then accept or reject? Doesn't that make His sacrifice on the cross incomplete and in fact mean that in essence He failed if we do not choose Him, if he truly died for every single person alive? And then was totally confused when I read passages like "4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. (Ephesians 1:4-6 ESV)After reading The Sovereign Grace of God I was confused no more, it took awhile to be able to read it, as my husband who has been studying scripture since leaving Catholicism for Christianity at the age of 16, found this book so interesting he couldn't put it down. After reading much of this book, and doing some soul searching I left that church and am now in a church that has a pastor who says "you were predestined in eternity past to come to Christ, through no work of you own.... just as scripture said for Jacob I loved and Esau I hated... before their births."Thank you. Dr. James White, for helping me to have a deeper more clear understanding of scripture, and being a huge part in bringing me to realize Jesus is my Lord and Savior. Thank you for teaching me the difference between exegesis and eisegesis and how to spot it, and reigniting my critical thinking skills and then helping me to hone them. I was able to spot that the church I was going to was a complete eisegesis church with VERY little exegesis, and it was this critical skill that helped me to truly put myself at the foot of the cross, repent and say that I agreed with Jesus that only He was the WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE and I needed Him for my salvation, and thank Him for all He did to bring me in communion with Him.I have become a faithful listener to the DIVIDING LINE on YouTube, and am learning so much from that show and your archived lectures and debates.Thank you and may the Lord continue to Bless you and your work.
How should the Bible be interpreted?Virtually every page of the Bible emphasizes God's sovereign control of reality. Yet when I read the arguments against God's absolute sovereign control, I realize the gymnastics religious professors will exercise, to water down this most solemn truth. Here is just one of a million examples: "A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps (Proverbs 16:9)."Do professors become addicted to religious systems that honor mankind's control rather than God's? Even the most elementary reading of the Bible should make anyone realize that (according to the Bible!) you can't even take one breath apart from God's sovereign control of it!"The Sovereign Grace of God: A Biblical Study of the Doctrines of Calvinism" as well as "Potter's Freedom" by Dr. James R. White are by far the best defenses I've ever read in the debate for the biblical truth of the sovereignty of God. When it comes to this subject, White is a superb grandmaster. The book is a pouring out of truth with no moves wasted. Ever word is like pure gold! In addition to White's masterful presentation of biblical truth, it creates the compelling desire to highlight many more Bible verses (such as the ones I've listed below), that speak to God's meticulous sovereignty. It seems that any serious student of the Bible would have to be "mentally blind" to disregard God's cumulative evidence, much of which is presented in not only "The Sovereign Grace of God: A Biblical Study of the Doctrines of Calvinism", but additionally in "Drawn By The Father" by Dr. White.1.
