I loved the original edition when I got it in 1982. This one is a disappointment in light of that, since it is the original editionwith one chapter added on at the end, on modern O gauge production. The rest is identical.New information has been found about the early days of Lionel since the 1981 edition came out. Mr Hollander brings none of this in. For example, it is now known that 1900 and 1901 Lionel catalogues exist. (the 1901 reproduced in a 1992 Train Collectors Quarterly).So unless you are eager to read about modern train companies, buy the 1981 edition and save some money!
This book was written over 30 years ago but it does a good job of relating the history of Lionel trains and their development by Joshua Cowen (Cohen). If you own Lionel trains, you had better read this book because you will better understand the technical details of the operation of your trains after reading about who, why and where they were developed. Good reading for Lionel hobbyists!
All Aboard, the story of Lionel in model railroading is a fascinating look into the past of toy trains. The history of the company is well told as is the description of the Lionel Cowen family. Anyone with nostalgia in their blood will enjoy this book. Relive your early years with the toy trains. Great reading.
If you have ever owned a Lionel Train, and wondered how they came to be, who the people were behind the business, etc, this book has all the answers. As a child, I had no interest in anything more than the model train toy that I was playing with at the time. But as an older adult looking back, I found this historial review of the company and its people absolutely fascinating. So much so, that I read the whole book (400 pgs) in about two sittings. Wonderful.
