I met Karen and Elvis when I moved to Jamestown not long after her life-changing house fire. I've always loved her writing style... beautifully descriptive, sweet and gentle at times, gut-punching at others. I don't want to give anything away, because the continuity of the story itself is important, but I laughed and cried and greatly enjoyed this book. If you've ever had a notion that you'd like to get away and live far from civilization up in the mountains, this book will give you the reality of it--it truly is "rough beauty."
As someone who knows the author (and who moved into the cabin when she moved out, following the loss of my own home), I can attest that her descriptions of life in the cabin and its surroundings are spot on and accurate, as well as emotionally honest and true. Her portrayals of life in the tiny town of Jamestown and of its inhabitants are, too. I laughed aloud at her account of the Poetry Night at the Merc, and my heart ached as she described the trials of dealing with her mother's medical condition and her grandfather's unwillingness to accept the name she chose to go by. The human condition is complicated, and Karen portrays that achingly, yet beautifully. When I was reading the book, devouring it, there came a point where I knew that the next section was going to be about losing Elvis, her beautiful husky mix dog, and I had to put it down because I knew that her account of that loss would be heart-wrenching. He was her world. It took a few weeks for me to pick it up again because I wasn't ready for the emotional impact. It was sad, but so tenderly written and wise that the tears that came were cleansing ones. This memoir will ring true to anyone who has ever lost a home or a beloved pet or been part of a dysfunctional family or a tight-knit community or all of the above, and it is written so poetically and with such emotional honesty that even if you haven't experienced any of that, you will feel that you understand it.
A wonderful book for anyone who is focused on seeing the world around them from many different perspectives. Karen has described her world so completely that a visual person can see the rough beauty and experience the beauty and awe of her surroundings. She has described her emotional world in such a way that I was vicariously getting it. I've felt that way.....I've been there! She describes the changes of that mountain environment so that even if you have not experienced the changes in season at an 8,000 foot altitude, you realize the impact on those people who live in this harsh yet spectacular environment. To me, perhaps the most important perspective was the sense of ritual and celebration. The melting of the spring thaw and the anticipation of the first wildflowers, the journal to list the day that each new flower appears. The planting of a garden in the high country which is a wonderful appetizer for the fauna of the area. The stars......you have never seen stars like this in the flatlands. The planning your life around the changes of an incredibly beautiful place.Thank you, Karen, Rough Beauty took me on a journey to capture and remember all of the perspectives of my life in the high country. I still spend time in that cabin in Peaceful Valley and each visit is a celebration. I read and thoroughly enjoyed this book while sitting on the back deck of that cabin.
This book was so enjoyable. I appreciate the independence of the character. Then she finally soften enough to allow someone to love her. Well written and looking for more books by this author
This book touched my heart, made me laugh, made me cry! Such stamina and grit as well as a tender heart.
This beautifully written memoir reads as a love letter to the Colorado mountains, the interminable spirit of the people who thrive there, Karen's beloved dog Elvis, and to the author herself. I'm a Colorado girl myself, who would never dream of camping by myself, and who craves fellowship the way the author craves solitude, yet every well-place word was enlightening and ushered me "home". Bravo!
One of the best books I’ve picked up in a long time. I definitely recommend adding this book to the top of your reading list this winter. The book will spark a longing for places you may have never experienced, or observations in nature not often seen—while also drawing you into a life boldly lived. Karen Auvinens spirit and tenacity shine through and inspire to live life on ones own terms. I just ordered copies for everyone in my book club...can’t wait to discuss it.
Beautifully written, Karen easily shares her life in the mountains, her experience with the landscape and place, her thoughts on solitude and community, and most of all her relationship with her beloved dog Elvis.
