This book really shows its age. In 1994 this would probably have been an indispensable book for the alternative opiate user/cultivator, but in 2017 it, in the age of erowid, dark markets, bulk online shipping, and pubmed, it reads more like a collection of junkie-mythology and old wives tales. Not that there’s nothing valuable here—the sections on cultivation and poppy history are informative, if redundant and circumscribed compared to contemporary resources—it’s that the value is hidden among heaps dated, and in some cases outright wrong, information. If you know your way around the opiate scene as lot of the tricks and tips will seem old-hat or down right antiquated in the way they embrace the wisdom of the drug rumor-mill with respect to things like potentiation, enzyme inhibition, extraction, and RoA. The author does try to sight sources and studies whenever possible, especially when dealing with numbers, but their scope and number reflect a level of access and dissemination to scholarly research that is limited by the era in which it was written.If you are looking for definitive information or guidance on the poppy plant and it’s uses you will do better to look elsewhere. If you are looking for a cogent, in depth history of opium cultivation and production you won’t find it here. Rather this book will give you insight into a bygone era of the opiate and counter cultural scene, as well as some interesting factoids and assays you won’t find elsewhere.
Depending upon what you're expecting, this is a good book. This is not a chemistry book so if you're looking for detailed explanations of how to turn raw opium into it's more refined alkaloids, look elsewhere. The book does explain how to milk the the opium from the bulb and other ways to extract it. If you're an info and history buff, as I am, you'll enjoy it. Lots on the historical uses and users. Some of the pasts users may surprise you, many will not. Fairly short, very easy to read.
This book is very detailed on how to grow poppies, the history behind it, and gives recipes on what you can do with the poppy pods. Very informational! A+
Book is not what I expectedI was looking for more information on how to properly cultivate poppy plants mainly for food but this is not the focus of this bookAnd the book is kind of confusing because though the food is not the focus neither is the opium it speaks AboutIt does not tell you anything more than how to grow it but does not go in to detail about much outs so there's really no point to this book if you know how to plant a seed and make it grow comet then you don't need this book
I believe it is very important to keep and learn how to take care of yourself. Medical help is not always there when you need it. You may find yourself stranded by yourself. Do you know how to fully take care of yourself if you were all alone? You might at least want a book reference in case. Always keep reference books in case you need to know how to fo something. Do you know how to tell time with no watch? Get and keep reference book of how to information. You may be the only survivor who has reference knowledge on how to survive. Do you know how to properly remove ticks, bee stingers, and thorns? How do you make an antiseptic if you are wounded all by yourself? What leaves are good for wounds? What does the color of the sky mean to predict weather? Keep reference books even if you never need them?
A decent look at another plant like marijuana that has been systematically demonized by the free press! A look at ways to grow your own painkillers, funny Amazon sent my computer a link to purchase poppy flower seeds!

Good starter book. It's difficult to find knowledgeable and cediable sources on the net. Spent a bit too many pages on the history. You'll recognize that many online sources are just quoting this book. Enjoy
