Whatever you thought of them before, Rick Ankiel’s story might well make you a St. Louis Cardinal fan. Or, if you’re from Chicago’s North Side, it may at least earn the Cards a bit more of your grudging respect as an organization. This is a great book for anyone who has ever wrestled with failure or shattered dreams while pursuing an important goal, and who consequently had to pick themselves off the ground, get their minds right, and start over. Some people are crushed when that happens. But “The Phenomenon” testifies to the fact that it doesn’t have to be that way.My local baseball buddies and I knew the ‘big picture’ when we had the privilege of watching Ankiel patrol center field for the Washington Nationals not many years ago. A prodigious pitching talent whom, after a promising rookie regular season with St. Louis, blew up in his first playoff start and then, was never the same pitcher. We called it “the yips.” We knew the phenomenon had destroyed other careers. We knew Ankiel had remade himself, despite some injury setbacks over the years, as an outfielder. Though we were catching him just a bit past his prime, he glided to balls with ease, made some eye-popping throws from the outfield, and hit some homers for our Nats. We cheered extra hard for him even on days when he didn’t do those things. But if you want Ank’s intimate version of the story, be warned: he’s not making nice. This is a gut-honest story about sin and virtue; fall and redemption; with plenty of menacing fear mixed in. This story will take you through some dark and stormy nights. And, there is no fairy tale ending. What is here, though, is straight talk about how one man took on the demons that had been planted in his life at an age when no kid deserves to have real-life monsters introduced into their life.Don’t skip the Introduction. It’s well-written and serves as an anchor because you’ll learn much about who Rick Ankiel is today. You’ll need that to get through the first few chapters, which are chaotic and a written in a style that’s a bit hard to follow. But get as much as you can from them and don’t get discouraged, because like some of my favorite pitchers, Ankiel settles in after that first inning or so. By Chapter 4, I felt like I understood the story I had been reading. From that point forward, Ankiel and co-author Tim Brown get the words and the flow right.I will never think of the baseball men who cared for Rick Ankiel the same way after reading “The Phenomenon.” These men include Tony LaRussa, Mike Matheny, and super-agent Scott Boras. And wishing we could all have a counselor as wise as the late Harvey Dorfman.“It’s not your fault, Ank. What are you gonna do about that?”Now excuse me while I go out and buy my first ever Cardinals’ baseball cap.

I bought this book because I like baseball and it sounded interesting. As I got involved in the story it hit a cord with me. I never played sports but I have seem a close relative of the monster that is in the book. I suffered a panic attack at work one day. I think there are many people who have had that experience. Your brain is amazing and when it turns against you it is rough. This isn't just a story about baseball but about life. Thank you for sharing.

After following Rick's career from Joplin, Missouri, to the Cardinals and beyond, it was interesting to learn the backstory. I'm so happy for him that things have turned out as well as they have. Sounds like he is a terrific dad. I remember watching Tony after his homerun when he came back to Busch as an outfielder, and I don't think I have ever seen LaRussa so demonstrative -- it pretty much epitomized how all of Cardinal Nation felt that night, I'm pretty sure.

Rick Ankiel's story is gut-wrenching, moving, and one of quiet triumph. I remember vividly watching this young man fall apart on the "humpbacked stage" as he so wonderfully described the mound, back in 2000. His 17-year journey since that moment, and all that led up to the fatal pitch which unleased the yips, is written in a simple, direct style that is quite eloquent in its way.Baseball fans will enjoy this book. People who have wrestled with an inner demon will embrace it with a passion.

I loved baseball as a kid. I watched my dad coach my older brother' s team for nine or ten years. He even let me be bat"boy" in the early 1960s when girls just didn't play baseball. As I aged, I watched other sports, and my passion for baseball faded. But a book about baseball always brings back those feelings from my childhood.I saw Rick Ankiel on a TV interview pushing this book. I was intrigued. I had heard golf commentators talk about the yips, so I understood the concept--suddenly a golfer couldn't hit the fairway or perhaps started 5-putting. But in baseball? I had to read this book. The voice in this book is outstanding. I know he had a co-writer, but I really felt like Ankiel was talking. I could feel exactly what he was going through when "the Monster" hit him and his struggle to overcome it. That he has become a successful adult after his life obstacles (including a rather deplorable childhood) is truly amazing. Even if you've never cared about baseball, this book is inspirational.

I wasn't a fan of his before this book but now I am. I only knew him as the guy who came unwound but having the courage to write this and talk about it is incredible to me. Very well written too. Puts a lot of things in to perspective when you think about it the way he dealt with it.I am so glad I read this book.

Practically screams for a major motion picture and is quite beautifully written. The yips, the thing, the monster is not limited to sports, and Ankiel's struggles are the struggles of countless others. Wonderful read, you are a hero to this Cub fan! (I know, I know)

An amazing story. Rick Ankiel doesn't pull any punches about his baseball career, family life, struggles with the yips, anxiety and his return as an outfielder. This is more than just a baseball story. He really presented another side of baseball players that a fan doesn't even think about when watching a game. I really enjoyed this book and glad Ankiel found some peace of mind.
